Wide Angle - Intro week

I am so excited about these next 8 weeks as we will see God's beautiful story unfold.  I pray this week that you will each be in the Word often and also memorizing those books of the Bible.  I pray that your hearts will be open to the incredibly big story that God is telling.  Let me know your thoughts and questions as you seek to understand God's Word.  It's a really big, old book and it's OK to have questions.

May God's Word forever change your life...

I am so excited to dig into Gods word in the coming 8 weeks , in my quiet time and at Youth Group!

Adam, thanks for listening to God and being a moldable lump of clay in His hands! You are an awesome leader.

Numbers 15:32-36
Why would our God, even go beyond allow, command that this man be stoned to death?
We talked about the old laws in HUB group, so I understand that even though a lot of these rules don't apply to our lives anymore, it's the fact that God was behind these rules. Also, I know that since Jesus can to make everything right so the laws do not need to take priority because Jesus died for our sins.....But do you still think that God gets this mad when we don't follow the 10 commandments, or any of his rules in the new testament?

Also, look at Genesis 38- God does not condemn the use of prostitutes to Judah. He used one who happened to be his daughter-in-law. But when he find out that his daughter-in-law was a prostitute, he was going to kill her. yet he used her? and once he found out that he had slept with her, it was okay?!?!?! how does that make any sense? is this just because he was a man and she was a woman?

there is just a couple of my questions adam. you shouldn't be surprised that I had some questions! Thanks

Way to go Jenny. I knew you'd have some good questions. Thanks for being bold and asking them. I will attempt to answer them, but in no way do I have a complete understanding of all of Scripture, so take what I say and compare it with the rest of Scripture...

Numbers 15:32-36
This is the whole reason that Jesus ends up being so important. You have a perfect God and imperfect people. We can't do enough to please God on our own. Keeping the Sabbath holy was one of the 10 commandments, just like not murdering. If the guy had murdered someone, it wouldn't upset us so much that he got stoned to death, because murdering seems worse than breaking the Sabbath. However, to God, sin is sin. This guy broke the law and received his due punishment. Aren't you glad that God, in all His grace, sent Jesus to die and pay the price for that sin so that when we break his law people don't throw rocks at us? The more I read the books of the Law (Genesis through Deuteronomy) the more I realize how much love, grace, peace and joy we have in Jesus. Make sense?

Genesis 38 -
Messed up story for sure. I'll try and shed some light. Here goes...
1. A woman's primary purpose in those times was to provide an heir and let the family line go on. Her husband had died and then the brother in laws duty at that time was supposed to marry her, but he didn't want her to get pregnant and so, umm, didn't properly perform his husbandly duties. So, she had no one to provide her with a child. So, that is why she dressed up like a prostitute and slept with Judah, to preserve the line. Being fruitful and multiplying were crucial to Israel's existence at the time, and so her whole purpose in life was completed by this act. That was her purpose. Although God doesn't like prostitution, she had been denied a husband in a sense and Judah hadn't given her his next son. So, she resorted to desperate measures. Seems weird and wrong to us, but understanding the present time, she actually had great intention. Preserving the family line was huge, that is why God killed Onan when he didn't honor Tamar's desire to preserve the family line.
2. Judah acted wrong for sure. He took Tamar for his own pleasure and then wanted to kill her for prostitution. Not a good deal at all. That is just one man acting in sin. At least at the end he says, "She is more righteous than I."
3. And yes, you are right about the woman's place in society then. You would be disgusted to read about how women were viewed in society then.

Let me know if any of that clears things up at all. There are so many questions I have too Jenny. Asking questions is a sign of learning.

Later, Adam

Way to go, Adam! I am so glad that you've started this new series. I've sometimes wondered why we don't take one book at a time, and go through it like we do on Sundays, that we go through more of the Bible, and learn more, no offense. I look forward to this opportunity to study the Bible more. I'm mostly interested in what you have to say on Hebrews; I know that'll be one of the last ones you do, but I'm curious to learn more about it. I've read before, but haven't really understood it all well. Can you explain its main message for me? I'm studying it in my quiet time this week, and I want to know your take on it. Thanks!
Melissa
